Stop Art Center from Destroying Elmhurst
The Issue
I've been the proud owner of a mom and pop barbershop in the heart of Elmhurst, IL for 20 years. JMC Barbershop is more than a business—it's a cornerstone for countless families and a hub for community interaction. Now, the future of my barbershop is in jeopardy. The proposed art center intends to demolish our building, disregarding the local businesses and unique character that make Elmhurst special.
Elmhurst has always been a vibrant town, with a rich history that supports small, independent businesses. It's these shops and services that offer a personal touch—a distinct splash of Elmhurst charm that corporate chains and large developments simply cannot replicate.
Recent studies show that 70% of small businesses nationwide contribute to their communities through local events, sponsorships, and partnerships. Yet, similar endeavors frequently fail when managed on a larger scale, devoid of community integration. Building this art center at the cost of destroying local businesses ignores these vital statistics and the residents’ voices.
Alternatively, we propose finding a more suitable location for the art center. An underutilized building or vacant lot could easily house this new development without dismantling the economic and social fabric that our local shops have created over decades.
Time and again, community-first approaches prove successful, as they combine growth with preservation. Elmhurst deserves to expand without sacrificing its soul—a balance must be struck. Join us in standing up for the cradle of small businesses and tell the powers that be that Elmhurst will not stand quietly by.
Support our community’s resilience and future by signing this petition. Help preserve Elmhurst's distinctive charm and economic welfare by voicing your opposition to this unwarranted demolition.
