Stop Arlington Public Schools from ignoring IEPs and unfairly punishing students

The Issue

My family has endured unfair and detrimental treatment within Arlington Public Schools, an experience unfortunately shared by many. My brother was bullied for years, and when he finally defended himself after being pushed, he was the one suspended without any consequences for the other student. This unjust treatment damaged his reputation, cost him friendships, and adversely impacted his education. He isn’t alone in this struggle; around 15 other families in our community have reported similar experiences of excessive discipline and lack of justice.

The issue with Arlington Public Schools runs deep. Despite students having Individualized Education Programs (IEPs) in place, the school system has repeatedly ignored these crucial documents that are supposed to tailor education to each student’s unique needs. The IEP is a legally binding document designed to ensure students with disabilities receive the support they need to succeed academically. The failure to adhere to IEPs not only violates students' rights but severely hampers their ability to learn and grow.

Moreover, the unfair disciplinary actions, similar to what my brother faced, appear to be a systematic issue within Arlington Public Schools. Suspensions and other severe punishments are administered without thorough investigation or a fair review process, often targeting students whose only fault is defending themselves, much like in my brother's case.

The impact of ignoring IEPs and unjust punishments doesn't just stop at immediate educational setbacks. It leaves lasting emotional scars on students and shatters their confidence, making it even more challenging for them to continue their education and social interactions successfully. It's time for Arlington Public Schools to acknowledge and address these critical issues head-on.

We demand that Arlington Public Schools implement the following actions without delay:
1. Mandatory training for all school staff on the importance and implementation of IEPs.
2. A comprehensive review and reformation of the current disciplinary policies to ensure fairness and due process for all students.
3. Creation of a panel involving parents, teachers, and administrators to oversee disciplinary actions and review cases to ensure bias is eliminated.

Every student deserves a fair, supportive, and inclusive educational environment. Stand with us in urging Arlington Public Schools to honor the rights of all students and ensure they are supported, not punished, for standing up for themselves or trying to cope with their educational challenges. Please sign this petition to make our community’s schools a better, more equitable place for every child.
