Stop Aqua water utility From Destroying Bee Colonies in Water Meter Boxes
The Issue
As a resident of Manchaca, TX, it is troublesome to learn that it is the practice of the company that runs the water grid in my neighborhood (Aqua | An Essential Utilities Company) to exterminate bee colonies that take up residence inside water meter boxes.
Local beekeepers have expressed their willingness and ability to relocate these bees to hives where they can thrive and continue their critical role in the pollination process. Pollination is not just beneficial to flowers but is also essential for food crops-- approximately 30% of the world's crops and 90% of our wild plants depend on cross-pollination to spread and thrive (source: US Department of Agriculture). Bees are essential players in the ecosystem and our food production systems, and they are under threat from pesticides & climate change, so their preservation is crucial for the continuation of biodiversity.
The action Aqua takes is not only harmful to our bees but also impedes upon the opportunity for beekeepers to assist. Bees are threatened globally, with the population declining at an alarmingly fast rate. The possible extinction of bees could result in devastating consequences for human survival as they play an essential role in our world's food supply chain (source: The Honeybee Conservancy).
The process of bee removal is simple and does not put the meter or boxes at risk of damage. There are many example videos of the hive removal www.youtube.com/watch?v=YREWkt4K64o
Our request is simple but vital. We ask Aqua Water Utility to cease their destructive practices in the extermination of bees inside meter boxes and instead cooperate with local beekeepers to provide a safer, more sustainable solution. This change not only ensures the survival of these crucial creatures but also contributes to a healthier, more balanced local ecosystem.
Please sign this petition urging Aqua Water Utility to consider our plea for a healthier ecosystem and a sustainable future.
Thank you for your attention, for your signature, and for caring about bees.
