The Issue

I recently saw images of animals like monkeys and dogs being used in laboratory testing here in Belgium, and it deeply affected me. The sight of these innocent, sentient beings suffering in sterile, confined environments was haunting. Knowing that they endure pain and distress for the sake of research has compelled me to take action. We cannot ignore the suffering of these animals. We must do better as a society, and it is time to move towards alternatives that do not involve harming animals.

Every year, thousands of animals, including primates and dogs, are used in research in Belgium. These animals are often subjected to invasive procedures, confined in small cages, and ultimately euthanized after experiments. According to the European Commission, Belgium used 507,000 animals for testing in just one year, which is both alarming and unacceptable. These numbers are not just statistics; they represent living beings who feel pain and fear.

The use of animals in testing is increasingly seen as an outdated practice, given the advancement of alternative testing methods. Cutting-edge technologies such as in vitro testing, computer modeling, and research using human cells and tissues can provide us with the scientific data we need without harming animals. For instance, the European Union’s REACH regulation requires companies to avoid animal testing wherever possible, yet Belgium lags behind in fully implementing these innovative techniques.

Protection for these animals is not only a moral obligation but a demand for progress and innovation. By investing in and promoting alternative methods, we can lead the way in humane and effective scientific research. The Federal Public Service for Health, Food Chain Safety and Environment in Belgium must prioritize the adoption of these alternatives.

Join me in urging Belgium to stop animal testing and protect animals used in research by implementing non-animal testing alternatives. Your signature can help advocate for the rights of these animals and pave the path toward a more ethical and compassionate future in science. Please sign this petition to make a difference.
