Non-Toxic Rancho Mission Viejo started this petition to President, Rancho Mission Viejo Don Vodra and

When we know better, we must do better.  Our adults, children, and pets are getting sicker and sicker due to toxic spraying of chemicals in Rancho Mission Viejo when other viable and healthier organic landscaping options are available.  Some things are out of our control.  This is something that our developing city can do something about to make it safer for us, and our neighboring communities.  We need your help to SIGN THIS PETITION so Rancho Mission Viejo developers understand that we care about our own, our adult loved ones, our children, and our pets' health.

Rancho Mission Viejo neighborhoods are being sprayed weekly with about 9 different pesticides (such as herbicides, fungicides, insecticides, rodenticides, microbicides, etc.) that are known hazards to humans and domestic animals, along with other wildlife.  We have waited patiently for a year for current management to find safer options, and they conducted test plots of organic products that were doomed to fail.  They, thankfully, removed use of Round-Up (Active Ingredient: Glyphosate), but simply resumed spraying of other toxic chemicals, biosimilar to Glyphosate.

With 54% of our children having now chronic illness, we have to look at environmental factors that contribute to this. A child in a household using home and garden pesticides is 6.5 times more likely to develop leukemia than one in a home that does not. Pesticides and flame retardants have now surpassed lead and heavy metals as toxicants that lower IQ since the latter have been restricted.  The American Academy of Pediatrics has even come out to say that children’s exposure to pesticides should be limited as much as possible.  In Systems Theory, human behavior and constraints can be complex.  Epigenetics, in biology, is the study of how the gene gets expressed versus the genetics themselves.  Both of these take into account our environment and the impact on us as a person, with our own internal eco-system.

Some of the toxic chemicals currently being sprayed are Lifeline (Active Ingredient: "Glufosinate-Ammonium“) that is linked with reproductive and developmental effects, is a neurotoxicant, and possible skin and eye irritant, as well as possible kidney, lungs and blood toxicant), and SpeedZone (Active Ingredient: "2,4-D” that is linked to toxicity with honeybees, is genotoxic, contributes to reproductive and developmental harm, is a neurotoxicant, respiratory irritant, eye irritant, and possible skin irritant. It is also linked to possible liver and kidney issues, synergistic adrogenic effects when combined with testosterone which can accelerate Prostate Cancer, linked to non-Hodgkins Lymphoma and Sarcoma, and was a portion of what was in the cocktail that was Agent Orange most popularly known in Vietnam. The U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs, or VA, is aware of Agent Orange being a cause for Parkinson’s Disease, and other issues such as accelerated Prostate Cancer and Diabetes). The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) does not test these products in their combination form and the inert ingredients are sometimes just as more or equally toxic, so it is left up to us, as citizens, homeowners, and parents to push for healthier options.

Our homeowners in our sister community in Ladera Ranch, are also deeply concerned about these toxic materials being sprayed into our air, land, and water, and have a separate petition.  We are working together since our landscape issues can affect one another.  You and your family can still be affected if chemicals are not sprayed on your street.  Pesticides have been shown to drift for miles and persist in indoor carpet fibers for a year after they are tracked inside. The U.S. Geological Survey found that, “After they are applied, many pesticides volatilize into the lower atmosphere, a process that can continue for days, weeks, or months after the application, depending on the compound. In addition, pesticides can become airborne attached to wind-blown dust.”

We cannot wait any longer while our loved ones and ourselves are unnecessarily exposed to these toxins.  We, as a formal group that supports a healthy community, have researched and presented viable alternatives to, not only the HOA board (Rancho MMC), but also Executive Leadership of Rancho Mission Viejo since they have not yet taken adequate action so far.

We are asking the leaders of Rancho Mission Viejo to immediately stop the use of all toxic pesticides and switch to proven organic methods.  We have requested a meeting with them, and have national consultants waiting to be brought in to help them with this process.  We are also requesting a pilot of a few sites so that we can formulate a healthy and lasting option for the community, versus a product swap and bandaid.  Cities across the U.S., and even in our own neighbors in Southern California, are already ahead of us.  The city of Irvine is a beautiful example of a shift towards non-toxic solutions back in 2016 and and the first in Southern California to adopt an organic program.  Would like to see Rancho Mission Viejo join in this endeavor.  When we know better, we must do better.

Please join us and SIGN THIS PETITION, and share with your friends and neighbors!
