Stop allowing kids to go to school with lice! Or bring back lice checks at school!

The Issue

In my 23 years of living I never before had to deal with a lice situation. Recently my son came home infested with them, I later found out that it came from school. They said they sent out letters to inform parents but I never received that letter. I discovered the lice on his head on my own because I noticed that he began to scratch his head a lot. I then also found them in my head & in my other 2 kids heads as well. I had to pay over $300 to get rid of this infestation. I’m not sure how these parents are able to afford these treatments but I barely make it through with the little bit of money I have, because I had to pay over $300 to get rid of the infestation the first time back in December of 2022 I got backed up on not just my rent but also my bills. Now here we are April 19 of 2023 & I’m just now catching up on all of my payments just to find out that my son has lice AGAIN! His birthday just passed (April 13th) & I wasn’t able to do much due to me trying to get caught up on everything else. Now I have to figure out how I’m going to get rid of these lice on our heads for the second time. My son already has to deal with all these other issues he has with his health & mental, & now this. I try my hardest to keep my kids safe, healthy, & out the way of others, we don’t go out much & I don’t have them around other kids to prevent them from getting sick or stuff like this from happening. I of course let my kids play outside & sometimes with family members but we’ve never before had any lice issues. For him to be in a special education school he should not be coming home with lice, it not only distracts him but it also causes emotional distress. It’s so hard for me to have to sit him down & search his head for lice & do these treatments on him to get rid of them when he barely even lets me touch his hair. Not only is it physically hard to keep him in a chair to search his head or even to treat him but it’s also emotionally hard to watch my son cry & scream all because the school system has become so irresponsible with situations like these. When I brought it up to the school district they said that I have to contact the state about this because it became a law that kids can’t be kept home because of lice, & that there’s nothing they can do. So now here I am trying to make a change because this is not fair at all especially when I (just like any good parent out there) try my best to keep my kids safe & healthy just to send him to school to get infested with lice & come home & infest not just his siblings but also myself & anyone else we may come around because that’s how easily they can spread. My son once had long beautiful curly hair but we unfortunately had to cut it all off because it began to grow uneven & it also started to lock up in certain areas & it was hard for us to untangle it because he wouldn’t really let us touch it. Since then I’ve been letting it grow , but now I’m afraid I’ll have to cut it again because this is the second time he comes home with lice & he will not let us treat him without having to struggle with him from him kicking & screaming because he doesn’t want to be bothered. At this point I will not rest until these kids get some justice. It is not fair not just to us parents but to these children as well. If this continues it can begin to spread & it will never end, remember that it takes just 1 that can turn into 50 in just one persons head. & they’re so easy to spread you can literally sit next to a person & they can get right in your hair. Back in the days schools had Drs come search kids heads at schools & do treatments on them or they wouldn’t let a kid back in school until they’ve treated the lice infestation. Now they just don’t care about it anymore & they’ve left us to deal with it on our own & that is not right! Something MUST be done & we can all make a change by standing up & standing on what we believe in!
