Dear supporters
Thank you for signing and sharing.
Not only have the two grandmothers Yvonne Williams & Yvonne Smith been taken off the flight to Jamaica & released from Yarls Wood detention centre, we believe from contact with the Home Office that there will be no deportations to Jamaica in May, however they were unable to confirm that deportations in charter flights would not go ahead after May. Therefore we have broadened the scope of this petition to include any charter flights to Commonwealth countries until the Government have set out a clear strategy. We hope you will continue to support this.
This evening I attended a meeting in Parliament, ahead of tomorrow's debate in Parliament. It was chaired by David Lammy MP and Jeremy Corbyn, Diane Abbott and several Labour MPs, including those parents and grandparents were of the Windrush generation spoke. The meeting was also attended by Windrush families who were featured in the Guardian newspaper speaking about the injustice they have faced. I raised at the meeting the importance of a statement from the government, confirming that all charter flights will be stopped.
In addition to sharing the petition, I encourage you to contact your MPs and to contact the Home Office press office calling for a written statement that no charter flight deportations will go ahead until the government have set out a confirmed policy on who is protected.
Our petition has generated a lot of media interest including a Jamaican TV station, CVMTV, London Live, the BBC, the Morning Star, Press TV and the Voice Newspaper.
Let's keep up the pressure together.
Thank you and Best Wishes
Zita
