The first death involving a Brightline train, which officially launched in January 2018, happened in July 2017 during test runs. Since then, 40 more have been killed — a rate of more than one a month and about one for every 29,000 miles the trains have traveled, according to an analysis of Federal Railroad Administration data by The Associated Press. Please allow me to also share with you another non-partisan, but important issue. Nurses Take Florida, a group dedicated to better patient care through safe staffing regulations, is asking for support for two bills that have been introduced in Tallahassee this year. This group, founded by nurses, is bringing light to an issue that may impact any person admitted to a hospital. There are no regulations about how many patients are allowed per nurse, even in ICUs. These nurses have said they have witnessed deaths because they were assigned too many patients to care for in an effort for hospitals to save on costs. Not all hospitals employ this dangerous practice, but as patients, we have no way of knowing which hospitals staff safely and which do not. Nurses Take Florida asks for your help to ensure safe staffing for all hospitals in Florida. Please take a moment to sign their petition to the Florida Legislature. Also, please write your legislators to support these bills. More information and links to legislators can be found at Nurses Take Florida.

"We don't have much time. All Florida Residents are encouraged to contact their Florida House of Representatives and Senators.
Currently, there is a bill in the Florida Senate (SB 204) and a bill in the House (HB 651), which will tackle safe staffing. The Senate bill has been forwarded to 3 committees.
If we don't reach out to our elected officials, the bill will not be addressed."

Thank you for allowing me to share a non-train issue, although with the deadliest train tracks in America running through our backyards, accidents will continue to happen, and we certainly hope the hospital we are sent to staff safely.
Wishing you and yours happy holidays as we continue to oppose All Aboard Florida, Brightline, Virgin, or whatever they call themselves next.
Lastly, thank you to all the volunteers that contribute to Florida Not All Aboard's Facebook page to help keep everyone abreast of the latest news.
