Stop airlines from using fragrances on flights
The Issue
Several years ago, I eagerly boarded a flight for a vacation I had been dreaming of for years. However, shortly after settling into my seat, I was enveloped in a cloud of manufactured fragrance—an experience that led to a severe migraine, aggravated my asthma, and resulted in me losing several days of my vacation to recuperate.
This isn't just my story; hundreds of thousands of people experience similar setbacks due to the fragrances used by airlines in their closed environments. Individuals with conditions like asthma, autism, Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD), myalgic encephalomyelitis (ME), mast cell activation syndrome (MCAS), multiple chemical sensitivities (MCS), fragrance allergies, airborne contact dermatitis, fibromyalgia, or those undergoing chemotherapy for cancer, often suffer needlessly due to exposure to these fragrances.
It is estimated that over 40 percent of adults report adverse health effects from exposure to fragranced products leading to migraines, respiratory issues, and neurological problems. These fragrances, marketed under appealing names, mask stale cabin air with fragrances, which, though appealing to some, are a health hazard to many.
Airlines must prioritize passenger health over unnecessary aesthetics and should immediately cease the practice of perfuming their airplanes. By implementing fragrance-free policies, airlines can create a safer and more accommodating environment for all passengers. Practical alternatives exist, such as improving air filtration and ventilation systems on flights, which would contribute to cleaner air quality and better passenger comfort without harmful side effects.
Join me in urging airlines to stop using fragrances on flights—let us make air travel safe and inclusive for everyone, free from invisible barriers that restrict our ability to travel comfortably. Please sign this petition to stand up for individuals forced to endure these conditions. Together, we can create change for the benefit of countless lives and ensure that travel is safe for everyone.
