Stop Airlines from Price Gouging Customers in Haiti

Stop Airlines from Price Gouging Customers in Haiti
The Issue
My family members and friends, like many others, have been stranded in Haiti for months. The only way they can return home is if they pay exorbitant prices - thousands for 1 person one-way. This is not just their story; it's the story of countless others who are being exploited by airlines (local like Sunrise Airways and international) during a time of crisis with outrageous no refund no change non-negotiable policies that add insult to injury. We empathize with those who have already paid because they had no choice but we urge you to stand with those who still are pressured from major airlines to pay 4 even 5 times higher prices for departures in May 2024. Pay or wait several more weeks to maybe see if flights will be suspended again or to see if they will be the next casualty. Understandably businesses and consumers have suffered these past months due to instability in Haiti but airlines must not hold loyal passengers accountable for recovering their losses especially people living below the poverty line per any developed country they are flying to. Employees and staff returning to stimulate the economy of every country other than Haiti itself.
Airlines are taking advantage of the situation and price gouging customers who have no other option but to pay these inflated prices. According to a report by the Bureau of Transportation Statistics, average airfares rose 10.2% in 2020 (Bureau of Transportation Statistics). However, what we're seeing with flights out of Haiti far exceeds this percentage increase.
This practice is not only unethical but also illegal under international law as per Article 50(3) of the Montreal Convention (1999), which prohibits price gouging during times of crisis or emergency.
We demand that airlines operating in Haiti stop this exploitative practice immediately and provide affordable options for those stranded due to circumstances beyond their control. We call on regulatory bodies to investigate these practices and hold airlines accountable for their actions.
Please sign this petition to stand against airline price gouging in Haiti and help bring our loved ones home safely without financial exploitation.
Since fares and flights are disappearing from websites like American Airlines, tell us your story of pressure, bullying, charges and fees from travel agents, airliners representatives etc to ensure this doesn't happen again.
