Stop airlines from overbooking flights

You probably have watched the now viral video of a man being battered and dragged from a United Airlines flight. The flight was overbooked yet passengers were boarded and when none volunteered to give up their seat, four of then were selected randomly for ejection. When this Doctor refused because he paid for the seat and had patients to treat at his destination in the morning, excessive force was exerted to remove him to the horror of the onlooking passengers.
But the real underlying cause is that airlines are allowed to overbook flights in the first place. This should be illegal as when passengers book, they are required to immediately pay for those nonrefundable flights. So even if someone didn't show up for their scheduled paid flight, the airline still collects the revenue.
Forcing us to give up a paid seat because of their greed in overbooking flights in the first place is tantamount to fraud/theft. Air travel nowadays often find us in smaller seats, fuller flights with less conveniences available. On top of that, we shouldn't have to worry that we will be forced to give up our seat. Worse still that if we refuse will be subject to violence. Sign this petition to end the practice of overbooking flights throughout the entire airline industry!
