The Issue

Nevada regulators just approved two new natural gas power plants in Storey County — built to feed the electricity needs of Fleet Data Centers, a subsidiary of Tract Capital Management, as it races to power AI computing. These plants are set to burn gas to generate 362 megawatts of electricity, enough to power more homes than exist in the entire city of Reno.

Doctors and respiratory health experts warned regulators this plan will hurt real people. Carson City physician Dr. Sandra Koch told the Public Utilities Commission of Nevada that the health risks of natural gas power plants are "too large to ignore," warning of higher rates of heart attacks, strokes, asthma, and lung disease in a region already facing rising heat. She also raised a deeper concern: "No business should be able to opt out of regulation because compliance is inconvenient or slow," Koch said. "Once that door opens for a few companies, it will be open for all of them."

Hundreds of Nevadans showed up to the September 17 hearing in Carson City to say no to this plan — and the commission approved it anyway, calling it "temporary" even though it's expected to run for years. Meanwhile, this deal appears to sidestep Nevada's own renewable energy standards, all so one company can meet its power needs faster.

Nevadans deserve clean air and a government that enforces its own laws evenly, not one that bends the rules for well-connected corporations. The Public Utilities Commission of Nevada and Governor Joe Lombardo still have the power to reverse course and hold this project to real environmental standards.
