Stop AI‑Driven Mass Layoffs: Protect India’s Workforce from Reckless Restructuring
The Issue
Who is Impacted?
Tata Consultancy Services (TCS), India’s largest IT services company, has announced that over 12,000 employees, 2% of its workforce, will be laid off, citing AI-driven restructuring.
These are not just numbers; they are families who dedicated their careers to the company, now being told they are expendable.
Each job loss devastates far more than an individual. According to the World Health Organization, unemployment increases the risk of depression and suicide by 2 to 3 times. Financial stress, loss of identity, and family breakdown are common consequences.
"These are the people that have worked for you, these are the people who have served you all their careers… so you send them out to live in the rain? Is that your definition of ethics when you treat your labour force that way?” – Ratan Tata, YourStory (July 2020)
It is heartbreaking that, just a few years after his passing, the very group he built is planning mass layoffs that go against the humane principles he championed.
What is at Stake?
This is not just about 12,000 jobs. It is about the soul of corporate India, whether we choose to value profit over people or people over profit.
"Companies can train employees in AI and redeploy them. If they claim they cannot, it reflects their inefficiency, not the employees’ inadequacy." - Sree Krishna Seelam
Businesses that hire and fire humans as disposable resources should face restrictions, including being barred from listing on the Indian stock markets.
If we stay silent, millions of workers could face the same fate, with India projected to lose 20–25 million jobs by 2030 due to AI automation.
The cost is not just economic, it is emotional and societal. Losing a job shatters confidence, impacts families, and can lead to mental health crises that ripple across generations.
Why is Now the Time to Act?
Today it is TCS. Tomorrow it could be your employer firing you.
The world is moving toward empathy and humane corporate responsibility. India must lead by ensuring AI empowers people instead of discarding them.
This movement is led by Middlemen.asia and Wedidit Foundation, organizations committed to justice, advocacy, and reform.
This effort was supported by our free eBook:
Public Interest Litigation: Power, Purpose, and People’s Rights – A deep dive into how PILs drive societal change.
This book, along with your signatures, will become tools for education, advocacy, and legal reform as we prepare to file a PIL in the Supreme Court of India demanding reforms to regulate AI-driven restructuring.
What Will Our PIL Demand?
We will file a Public Interest Litigation (PIL) invoking Articles 14 and 32 of the Constitution, asking the Supreme Court to:
- Mandate AI Impact Assessments before any mass layoff.
- Require companies to retrain and redeploy employees before terminating them.
- Use CSR and reserves for workforce upskilling instead of cost-cutting terminations.
- Create a statutory authority to oversee AI restructuring.
- Restrict stock market listings for companies that repeatedly fire employees due to AI without retraining.
