The AI boom is hitting right in our backyard, transforming Western Sydney into the nation's digital engine room while placing an unprecedented strain on our local environment. Massive, high-density data factories are operating just off the M7 and in nearby Macquarie Park, driving immense economic growth. However, their unquenchable thirst for electricity and millions of litres of cooling water directly threatens the stability of our shared power grid and local water ecosystems.

The expansion of artificial intelligence (AI) data centres in Sydney, Australia, has escalated rapidly, positioning our city as a leading AI market in the Asia-Pacific region. Major hubs are proliferating across Western Sydney, including areas such as Mamre Road with proposed mega-campuses and industrial zones like Artarmon and Macquarie Park. Key operators like NEXTDC, Macquarie Data Centres, and AirTrunk are constructing high-density, liquid-cooled facilities to keep pace with the growing technological demands.

While this growth supports the tech industry and enhances economic opportunities, it comes at a significant environmental cost. The energy consumption of these facilities is colossal, contributing to immense pressure on our power grid. Moreover, the water resources required for cooling purposes are vast, threatening local water ecosystems' balance, including those around areas near Arncliffe.

If this unchecked expansion continues, our community faces potential power shortages, increased energy costs, and ecological degradation. Beyond the environmental concerns, these developments could lead to unforeseen infrastructural and social impacts as we struggle to accommodate the accompanying growth and demands.

Concrete solutions must be enacted. We need to call on our city planners, environmental bodies, and the operators themselves to integrate sustainable practices urgently. Implementing alternative cooling technologies, investing in renewable energy sources, and considering the environmental impact ought to be top priorities in planning these expansions.

We are urging local government bodies and corporate leaders to reconsider the scale and pace of these developments. More stringent regulations and oversight are fundamental to ensuring that our local resources are preserved for future generations.

Help us safeguard our community from the negative impacts of these projects. Sign this petition to stop the unchecked expansion of AI data centres in Sydney and advocate for sustainable approaches to technological growth. Your support is crucial in making a change.
