STOP ADANI COAL THERMAL POWER PROJECT IN VIDARBHA

The Issue

Maharashtra Government has just cleared 370 acres forest land for Adani Group's 1980 MW coal thermal power project in Gondia, Vidarbha.

This move will cause a lot of adverse environmental impact on the local ecosystem and will also be a major air polluter. Compromising the forest land will affect the soil ecosystem, result in deforestation. Air pollution from coal-fired power plants includes sulfur dioxide, nitrogen oxides, particulate matter (PM), and heavy metals, leading to smog, acid rain, toxins in the environment, and numerous respiratory, cardiovascular, and cerebrovascular effects.

Major cities of India such as Mumbai, New Delhi are already reeling with severe air pollution levels. Projects like these will only add to the misery and further compromise the future of the next generations.

The global CO2 levels have already crossed the 400 ppm level for the first time in human history. India has just ratified the Paris Climate Change Agreement and this project goes against the very essence of the same.

The clearance for this project is against the central governments vision of promoting clean and renewable energy. We, THE PEOPLE OF INDIA urge the Hon. Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Hon. Chief Minister of Maharashtra to immediately roll back the permissions issued to this project and instead ask Adani Group to reinvest the same in renewable energy projects such as solar or wind in keeping with the vision of the central government.

Your actions today will determine the future of the coming generations. WE ARE NOT AGAINST DEVELOPMENT OF INFRASTRUCTURE, but when there are cleaner and greener options available then it is our moral and human responsibility to act in the common good of one and all.

I HOPE AND PRAY THAT YOU CONSIDER THIS PETITION WITH UTTERMOST URGENCY AND SINCERITY.
