The Dade Correctional Institution, located in Florida, is supposed to be a place of rehabilitation, not a house of terror. Numerous reports have surfaced detailing rampant abuse by prison staff. Inmates who attempt to exercise their civil and human rights are met with threats and punitive actions. Families attempting to advocate for their loved ones are also facing backlash, making a mockery of the justice system. It is inhumane and unjust to allow such conduct to persist in today's world.
Statistics from the Bureau of Justice Statistics report that prisoner complaints about staff sexual misconduct account for about 44% of all allegations across the United States prison system. Sadly, these facts highlight the grim reality many inmates and their families face, as many abuse cases go unreported due to fear of retaliation.
We demand that the state of Florida, along with federal authorities, take immediate action to investigate these claims and implement system-wide reforms. Authorities must ensure that correctional facilities are held accountable for their failure to protect the inmates in their custody. We call for independent oversight committees to be established, enabling inmates and families to report abuse safely without fear.
