Stop ABC Liquor Store from Opening at 825 S. Washington St.

Stop ABC Liquor Store from Opening at 825 S. Washington St.
The Issue
ABC Virginia intends to open a liquor store at 825 S Washington St, Alexandria, VA. This location is ill-suited as it is located in the middle of a tight-knit residential neighborhood, close to several schools and family and child-oriented establishments, and is without dedicated parking for ABC to secure. Residents do not need this establishment as there are already 4 other ABCs located within 2 miles of this location.
Members of the Old Town South and Southwest Quadrant community will be impacted in a variety of ways if this liquor store opens:
- Rise in crime: Off-site liquor establishments are associated with increased rates of violent crime, disorderly conduct, domestic violence
- Not neighborly: Retail block shifts from community and residential orientation to catering to passers-by. ABC doesn’t add value to our community or existing businesses
- Decreased parking: As there is no dedicated ABC parking, patrons will be clogging up neighborhood streets
- Increased traffic: Non-local traffic from the highway due to proximity of I-495
Act Now
The Virginia ABC Board intends to approve this site imminently if our neighborhood cannot convince them otherwise. Please help protect the integrity of our community by signing this petition and/or voicing your opposition to Virginia ABC directly:
Susan W. Johnson, Director of Real Estate and Facilities Management: (804) 213-4550, susan.johnson@VirginiaABC.com
Thanks, Your Southwest Quadrant Neighbors
