Stop a giant car park on Snape Marshes

Snape Marshes is a beautiful area of unspoiled countryside, vital for vulnerable wildlife, treasured by local residents and by visitors. Sir Simon Jenkins, former Chair of the National Trust, calls it one of England’s best views. It inspired Benjamin Britten to write some of his finest music and, exactly 50 years ago, to build his renowned Snape Maltings concert hall nearby, surrounded by the idyllic landscape he loved.

Today, much of the Maltings site is a shopping centre and luxury housing complex. Its owners Snape Maltings Ltd (formerly Aldeburgh Music) plan to develop even more shops, business units and accommodation - and to turn a vast area of the marshes into a 470-space public car park.

Lit for use every day and night, this car park would bring an estimated 130,000 cars a year on to a peaceful place where now otters roam, barn owls hunt and nightingales sing. A recent stroll on the car park site also found marsh harrier, whitethroats, cuckoo, blackcaps, sedge and reed warblers, little egret, several Cetti’s warblers, butterflies and damselflies, and a variety of flowers and grasses. All would be lost to the huge car park.

Its pollution from toxic emissions, noise, lighting and headlights would adjoin a Suffolk Wildlife Trust nature reserve. It would drive out an award-winning producer of rare breed animals. It would be close to two RSPB bird reserves, in a designated Special Protection Area, within an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, and on what is now rare wetland. The respected Wildfowl and Wetlands Trust says that wetlands “are often seen as wastelands or non-productive land, so they are filled in or destroyed, without people realising the wider impact for plant, animal and human life”.

The only people who have not yet realised this wider impact are the Directors of Snape Maltings. They do not value the land and life that their car park would destroy. Despite opposition from residents and visitors, from musicians, artists, writers, architects, wildlife experts and local Councillors, they are pressing ahead with their giant car park project.
