The Issue

I live just around the corner from the proposed data center site in Yaphank, New York, and I'm deeply concerned about the impact this facility will have on our community. Not only will the noise from the data center interfere with our everyday living, but there's a growing worry that our electric bills will rise significantly due to the enormous energy demands of the center.

Data centers are known to be significant consumers of electricity. According to a report by the Natural Resources Defense Council, data centers in the United States consume the equivalent of 34 power plants worth of electricity each year, which is an unsustainable path for our environment and our community. In a small community like Yaphank, this could mean higher energy prices for everyone, putting a strain on families who are already managing their budgets carefully.

Noise pollution is another grave concern. Data centers operate 24/7, resulting in constant noise from cooling systems and power generators, which can take away the quiet and peaceful ambiance that Yaphank residents currently enjoy. This disturbance can affect mental health and quality of life, making our homes less of a sanctuary.

Moreover, repurposing an already-built warehouse for such a heavy industrial use is concerning. The structural integrity and design of existing warehouses are often not suited to handle the physical demands and weight loads of a data center's IT infrastructure, which could pose future safety hazards.

We believe that local town planners and decision-makers should seek alternative locations that are better suited for such developments. It's crucial to explore options with less residential impact, both environmentally and socially. With combined efforts, let’s push for sustainable development that aligns with the community’s values and preserves the quality of life in Yaphank.

Your support can make a difference for the residents of Yaphank. Please sign this petition to oppose the use of the warehouse space in Yaphank for a data center and help us keep our community livable and sustainable.
