No wonder our supporters, (residents, local businesses and the Church) fear for the parents and children exposed to 700 buses following 14 different bus routes diverted along Upper North Street every day for 2 years. They walk along and across Upper North Street to get to the two schools at either end of the street. Many live in the street. Brighton & Hove City Council has done no safety assessment, nor any baseline monitoring of air quality. One NO2 diffusion tube that reports monthly to be installed. No continuous automatic monitoring of air quality, as installed in other parts of the city, will be set up for Upper North Street.
The Council's own document (Developing a New Transport Plan for Brighton & Hove) says that poor air quality is linked to respiratory diseases such as asthma. NHS England states that about 1 in 11 children and young people are living with asthma in the UK. The UK has one of the highest prevalence, emergency admission and death rates for asthma in Europe.
This diversion is starting on 9 January. We shall not rest, nor end this petition, until we have explored every avenue available to us to protect our children's health and safety and our own. We are working with the Environmental Law Foundation on the cracks we have found in the Council's armour. We hope to open them up into gaping holes.
