Stop 6-Bed HMO Approval at 662 Walsall Road opposite nursery.

Stop 6-Bed HMO Approval at 662 Walsall Road opposite nursery.
The Issue
Living in Great Barr, I've cherished the community spirit and tranquility that defines our neighborhood. My little girl loves to ride her bike along Walsall Road with her friends. This road is not just a path but a lifeline for the elderly residents who enjoy their long, peaceful walks. Now, imagine the stress and the potential disruption caused by a now converted 6-bedroom House in Multiple Occupation (HMO) at 662 Walsall Road, landing right between homes of two elderly couples who have already expressed their anxiety about this sudden change. Not to mention it’s more or less right opposite the nursery.
No permissions have been requested or licenses approved for this HMO. The introduction of such a facility threatens to change the very fabric of our beloved area. HMOs can increase population density significantly, leading to heightened noise levels, an uptick in crime rates, and more littering. These changes don't just impact one household – they ripple out, affecting all of us who call this neighborhood home.
The location for this HMO is right in the heart of our residential community. It goes against the character of our neighborhood, which is not designed to accommodate such an intensive property use. The impact on traffic, parking, and the local environment could be significant, making it harder for the elderly and children to find safe spaces.
Research has shown that areas with high concentrations of HMOs can experience a decline in neighborly interactions, leading to a less cohesive community spirit. Given the council's responsibility to protect the interests of its residents, approving this HMO without proper consideration and community consent is unacceptable.
We are not against housing development, but it should be thoughtful and in harmony with the existing community. We urge the council to reject the usage of this property as a HMO or, at the very least, conduct extensive consultations with local residents to ensure that any development is both beneficial and respectful of our community’s needs.
Join us in preserving the integrity and safety of Great Barr and Perry Barr. Sign this petition to let the council know that we stand united against approval of the 662 Walsall Road HMO without proper permissions and licenses. We also have the support of local councillor Morriam Jan who is working with us. Together, let's ensure that our voices are heard in safeguarding our neighborhood's future.
