The Issue

Disabled people, namely young girls and women, are at greater risk of undergoing forced sterilization at higher rates than non-disabled women/girls. Forced sterilization is legally permissible in 31 states in the United States, including in the capital of Washington, D.C.

The eugenics movement was spearheaded in the 20th century, in which Adolf Hitler was a huge proponent of it to give a brief historical context. About 70,000 Americans underwent involuntary sterilization. This reprehensible practice aimed to punish individuals who were considered to be "fast" or promiscuous, mentally unstable, or criminal delinquents.

If we do not take action to eradicate this atrocious practice, then families and individuals will continue to endure generational trauma. Gross human rights violations stem from the method of forced sterilization, such as the loss of autonomy to make decisions about reproductive health and sexual violence. Also, states will continue to harm disabled people with impunity. A few examples of states with laws that allow the practice of forced sterilization against disabled folks are California, Connecticut, Florida, and many more.
