#ISupportPrahran The Upgrade of Prahran Basketball Courts (Princes Gardens)

As the mecca of street-ball in Melbourne, Australia, Princes Gardens (aka Prahran Park) is in dire need of a facelift and expansion. The solo basketball court attracts people from all over Melbourne, as well as many visitors abroad who come to hoop at Australia's number one outdoor basketball court (as voted by www.CourtsOfTheWorld.com

The Princes Gardens outdoor basketball court is situated at 280 Malvern Road, Prahran, walking distance from the corner of Melbourne's famous shopping and entertainment precinct, Chapel Street.

Whilst the basketball court has seen a consistent increase in the amount of users over the past 10 years, unfortunately the demand currently far exceeds the supply.

On behalf of the community signed below, we would like to put forward these current needs to the City of Stonnington for the redevelopment of this bustling epicentre, in a continued effort to provide positive social and community messages through the act of inclusion, health and sport.

There is a current need to redevelop this fading facility, with the focus being to restore the current court to the next 10 years. The upgrade will also provide greater opportunities for the growing demand, by installing a second basketball court within the park's un-used space.

Suggestions put forward by the community - include:

  • Re-installing night lights, for users to play into the evening (as they once had prior to 2002)
  • Adding refurbished layer to surface, bringing back the vibrant blue, and re-painting correct line marking dimensions is a must
  • Replacing new backboards
  • Install new water fountains, for the health and well-being of users
  • Added tables and BBQ's, for families and friends to enjoy
  • Development of a second basketball court, to take advantage of the largely unused space within Princes Gardens, allowing more children to shoot hoops with parents while the more competitive players activate the current court every weekend
  • Installation of tiered-seating, for families and public to gather and enjoy watching local talent, another key reason is to save on annual council costs of hiring seating for the many events that take place each year at the park.

We encourage you to sign this petition, share it with your friends and show the true value of people coming together, working cohesively with councils, to achieve a common goal.

Brief History

10 years have passed since the old Prahran basketball court was re-built in 2006. This renovation was a major achievement for the City of Stonnington and the petition at the time, that was put forward by MSF on behalf of the local community.
Ultimately, the approved grant created a facility that served it's purpose over the past decade. The park became iconic across Melbourne, increased daily activity, developed local youth into aspiring athletes, provided a second home to thousands, and also opened the door to young leaders, working alongside the council, in hosting annual events for the community to enjoy.

Key Achievements Since 2006

  • Ongoing increased participation
  • Hosted events with international basketball team AND1 (on tour from USA)
  • Prahran featured on And1 Asia Pacific DVD and ESPN series
  • Converse Block Party (2011)
  • Prahran Summer Jam: cultural event initiated by young people in the community, working together with Youth Services (2012-16)
  • King of the Court: hosted by MSF Sports working together with City of Stonnington, for annual Viva Youth Festival (2013-16)
  • Voted #1 outdoor basketball court in Australia (out of 1,000+ courts) on CourtsOfTheWorld.com
