End Stone Mountain’s Confederate Reign

Le problème

Since 1915, Stone Mountain has been a symbol of racial hatred, the Lost Cause, and institutionalized discrimination. The carvings of Jefferson Davis, Robert E. Lee, and Stonewall Jackson that adorn the mountain make it the largest Confederate monument in the world. The Ku Klux Klan and the Daughters of the Confederacy funded the monument through the film “Birth of a Nation” and until the 1970s, the mountain served as a meeting grounds for hate groups and those who gripped onto the lost cause. Although it’s twisted history is now quasi-hidden, it has been commercialized with little change in intent. Georgia Law O.C.G.A. 50-3-1 (2010) currently protects Stone Mountain from any destruction, covering, or altercation in its role as a Confederate monument. In order to prove that this nation has progressed from its history of hate, Stone Mountain must go. Thus, the first step we must take is to repeal O.C.G.A. 50-3-1 (2010) and to remove Stone Mountain’s status as a Confederate monument. If you believe in this cause, please show it support by signing this petition and placing pressure on the Georgia Legislature.
