Save Heaton Mersey Common started this petition to Stockport Council (Councillor Colin Foster)

Save Heaton Mersey Common from degradation

We petition Stockport Council to take the sustainability of nature seriously. The council must address the very real need to make roads safer for cyclists; using existing infrastructure better to really reduce our carbon footprint and reduce energy consumption not increase it. This means we want to ensure the distinctive Mersey Heaton Common, a designated local nature reserve, is not damaged forever by a proposal to install heritage lighting alongside wholly inappropriate petroleum-based, resin shared cycle paths.

Say NO to this development.

The council needs to understand that the excessive light we dump into our environments is endangering ecosystems. Light pollution harms animals. Light in the dusk or dawn hours and at night particularly upsets animals’ natural sleep/wake cycles their ‘circadian rhythms’, with daytime species becoming active at night and missing out on rest and sleep. On the other hand, night-time species, tend to either avoid light or be excessively attracted to it, which keeps them from performing crucial activities such as hunting and mating.

Light pollution also harms humans. Like animals, we rely on the circadian rhythm to support the production of the hormone melatonin. This has antioxidant properties, induces sleep, boosts the immune system, lowers cholesterol, and helps the functioning of the thyroid, pancreas, ovaries, testes and adrenal glands. If it is suppressed we are at increased risks for obesity, depression, sleep disorders, diabetes, breast cancer, and more.

So, this petition isn’t just about Heaton Mersey Common, it's about all Local Nature Reserves, our health and wellbeing; and all our futures.
