The Issue

We are asking the StFX senior administration to close the doors of the university from 11am to 1pm on Friday, September 27th, to enable faculty, staff and students to fully participate in the Global Climate Strike.

On September 27th, StFX students, faculty and staff will be walking out of class and work, joining millions of people around the world in demanding a safe and livable climate and an end to the age of fossil fuels.

We’ll join hundreds of thousands across the country in calling for a just transition that enshrines dignity and justice for all, supports the rights, title and sovereignty of Indigenous peoples, and ushers in a 100% renewable energy economy that leaves no one behind.

It’s going to be a powerful moment, with millions of people around the world set to walk out of their classes, workplaces, and homes. Here in Canada, we’re mobilizing at a critical time. With the federal election just around the corner, it's vitally important to show every single political hopeful that we demand a climate plan in line with the scale of the crisis we face.

Universities play a critical role in shaping societal views and norms. As the birthplace of the Antigonish Movement, StFX is uniquely positioned to signal to the world the direction that is needed for our continued prosperity and, indeed, survival. If the university supports the September 27th Global Climate Strike by closing its doors from 11am to 1pm, and thus enabling all members of the university community the opportunity to participate, it will send a clear and powerful message that acknowledges the crisis we face.
