Jax Kilby started this petition to Peter Malinauskas MP (Premier Government of South Australia) and

Choke chains and slip collars are a cruel and unnecessary method of controlling dogs using outdated and barbaric corrective measures.  Positive Reinforcement (rewards based) training is a much more affective and kinder way of training animals.

Choke chains (and slip collars) have been scientifically proven to cause injured ocular blood vessels, tracheal and oesophageal damage, severely sprained necks, cases of fainting, asphyxiation, transient foreleg paralysis, laryngeal nerve paralysis and hind leg ataxia. Also there is no way to control how much the choke chain tightens, so it's possible to choke or strangle your dog. A choke chain may get caught while a dog is playing or running around, which may result in injury or death. Prolonged use of choke chains may cause injury, even if applied correctly.

Our Government could lead the way in legislating against the sale and use of choke chains and slip leads.  Properly fitted and well designed harnesses are not only much more humane but can also help prevent dogs from pulling.

Those who support this petition urge you, our leaders and decisions makers, to take urgent and positive action and work with us to end fear and pain based training methods in South Australia.
