Stop Gun Sales at Big Five Sporting Goods in San Mateo

Dear Mr. Miller:
We are moms, dads, children, grandparents, daughters and sons requesting that Big Five Sporting Goods stores stop selling guns in light of a recent incident at your San Mateo, Calif. El Camino Real location.
On March 23rd a man walked into the San Mateo store and attempted to purchase a gun “to shoot up a school.” A customer called the police, not a store employee. It seems that if an overt threat is made at a gun retailer and the competence of that customer is in question, the employee should be trained to report the incident to police immediately. The man should not have been able to leave the store and escape.
He was not caught for three days, which meant the entire community was on high alert. All the schools followed security measures that were unsettling for the children and included not allowing them to play outside during recess or lunch. The trickle down effect is that these kids, many of them too young to even know that school shootings occur, are now learning that their safety is at risk.
We do not feel that Big Five responded to this incident responsibly. We also do not want guns sold in our community, certainly not at a place where the majority of families bring their children to shop for soccer, baseball, softball, swim and other athletic gear. The guns are set in the front corner of the store and stand within feet of clothing and sporting gear where children and parents frequent.
We realize that the acts of terror committed by shooters involves an element of psychological instability that should be addressed with legislation and resources. But we believe that removing access to firearms and weapons is paramount in mitigating the danger these individuals present. If you choose not to stop selling the guns here, we as a community will boycott your store; will organize rallies and protest; and enlist the support of athletic associations to ensure that your store does not continue to thrive here. Essentially, we fill find other places to shop and not let up until you close.
We appreciate your attention to this and look forward to a response.
