End Budget-Cuts in Metro Police Department

The Issue

Budget cuts not only affect the lives of those who work in the department, but also those in the community as a whole. If budget cuts are implemented, this will downsize or eliminate units that focused on online predators, drug gangs, counseling for individuals released from detention facilities, traffic patrol, sex offenders, etc. The quantity and quality of the department will both be effected. This will decrease training opportunities, equipment, technology use. If we are to better Metro department, cutting their resources isn't going to resolve this issue. New York City had a budget cut down to a third of their department back in 2013. According to CNBC, " In August, the Garden state’s capitol city set a record for the homicides with 32 people killed. Last year violent crime was up 4 percent, and property crime up 7 percent, from the year before, according to FBI data". Higher crime does not help solve the problems that are already happening in depressed neighborhoods, poor education systems, and/or domestic violence. Some cities provide Volunteers in Police Service (VIPS) Program, which are those who help solve cases happening in their community. Volunteers can only go so far, because they are not trained to use firearms, detective training, or the skill training in handling criminal activity.
