Why this petition matters

Started by Vision Zero ATX

Since 2004, Austin has experienced an average of 64 traffic deaths per year. This year, we are on pace for one of the deadliest years on record, with 72 deaths having already occurred through August 26. Vision Zero ATX is a grassroots community organization advocating for greater City attention to this public health crisis.

Vision Zero is a proven approach for improving traffic safety through such things as better street design, police enforcement strategies, and community education. The ultimate goal is to eliminate traffic deaths and serious injuries. Vision Zero ATX believes that all traffic crashes have root causes which are preventable (i.e., driving under the influence, speeding, distraction, etc.). We acknowledge people will make mistakes - but those mistakes shouldn't be fatal.

We, the undersigned, are calling upon City Council to proactively address street safety by establishing a Vision Zero policy and by adopting and implementing a Vision Zero Action Plan by the end of 2015.
