Nexus: Lower ticket prices for students 16-18

The Issue

Don't you think it is unfair that students in full-time education are forced to pay a full adult ticket price for public transport? Students aged 16-18 are classed as adults when it comes to local transport but are still minors when it comes to the minimum wage of £3.79 an hour compared to the adults rate of £6.50.

The massive jump from a child's fare to an adult's for students in full-time education is unacceptable and disproportionate. A metro ticket for a child in all zones is £1.20 whereas an adult's is £4.60; more than the minimum wage for under 18s. How are 16-18 year olds expected to pay such a price everyday to get to and from school, apprenticeships or part-time jobs for those who have them.

For those who don't have part-time jobs for reasons such as personal circumstances, lack of jobs for young people or long school hours end up becoming more dependant on their parents who may not be able to afford these extortionate fares for their child just to get to school for their education.

I think the ticket prices for all Nexus fairs for 16-18 year olds should be lowered at the very least because we simply cannot afford these ridiculous prices everyday when we have no jobs or get very little money in the first place. Even if you don't live in the North East your signature would still be greatly appreciated so that young adults are able to get to and from school without having to worry about how much money they have left for their journey home.
