Save Medical Marijuana in Canada

The Issue

KEEP MEDICAL MARIJUANA ALIVE IN CANADA

On April 1 2014, the Canadian Government and Health Canada institute new laws surrounding access to medical marijuana which virtually eliminate ‘legal’ medical marijuana in Canada.  The new program flies in face of everything ‘access’ to medical marijuana is supposed to ‘mean’.  It totally disregards the original intent of the Supreme Court of Canada’s ruling in the 1997 Terry Parker Case granting Canadians access to medical marijuana.   The new Health Canada (MMPR) rules ban personal production of one’s own medicine barring access to medical marijuana for the majority of Canadians by making medical marijuana unaffordable.   For the average 5 gram per day medical user, the cost of their medication has gone from less than $2,000 per year production cost to more than $18,000 retail cost calculated at $10 per gram.  Even at a $6 per gram price which is what some LP’s have suggested, this is still $11,000 per year.  Far and away, well beyond what anyone should be expected to pay for their medication.  I don’t know many people who can afford an extra $1,000 per month.  It doesn’t take a mathematician to figure out that the numbers don’t add up for many patients, let alone those who are on fixed income like disability.

But the new rules don’t stop there…

The rules also ban access to true medical marijuana products such as edibles, concentrates, and oils. Many treatments require 10 to 100 times what is deliverable through smoking raw cannabis.  It is impossible to deliver the required dose of cannabis by smoking raw marijuana. In addition, many of these concentrated products have much less ‘euphoric feeling’ than smoking raw marijuana.  This forces a medical patient who ingests Cannacaps, Cannabis Oils such as RSO, or other edibles into smoking pot at a greatly reduced dose making their medication ineffective.  Furthermore, it turns a legitimate medical patient into a ‘pothead’ when in fact smoking pot is the last thing they want to do.

The last 3 years have provided some amazing stories of people who were left for dead by the medical community and ingested cannabis oil and cured their cancer.  Terminal brain cancer and lung cancer patients have all found cannabis oil to cure their cancer.    We are not talking about just aiding in symptoms such as pain... but actually curing cancer.  Hundreds of people are now walking cancer free because of the discovery of the miracle of cannabis oil.

THE CANADIAN GOVERNMENT IS DOING EVERYTHING THEY CAN TO KEEP THIS PRODUCT OUT OF THE HANDS OF CANADIANS.

Between these two fundamental changes in the Health Canada rules regarding access to medical marijuana and other cannabis products…

IT HAS ELIMINATED MEDICAL MARIJUANA IN CANADA

The new rules not only greatly restrict access for the majority of Canadians, but virtually eliminate any type of medical marijuana program in Canada.  It replaces it with an easy access POT program where all Canadians now have access to POT, but not medical marijuana.    I don’t know about you, but I don’t think a recreational user or chronic user's rights should circumvent a person with epilepsy.  Nor should someone have to go to jail in Canada for treating their disease with the most effective medication out there.   A person should not be arrested for curing their own cancer or trying to cope with debilitating pain.

What’s going on in Canada is ETHICALLY WRONG. It is the opposite of what most consider progress and is setting up the entire system for failure.  Canadians need to speak out and tell Stephen Harper and the rest of the Conservatives this is not right!   I am asking you to please take the time and sign this petition and tell Stephen Harper that we are not for the repression of Charter Rights, we are not for the abuse of the sick and poor, AND we are certainly not for quasi-legalization of marijuana in the form of a POT PROGRAM that leaves REAL MEDICAL MARIJUANA USERS in Canada OUT IN THE COLD.

Please support a patient’s right to grow their own medicine. Commercialization of medical marijuana in Canada can co-exist with a patient’s right to grow.

A practical solution would consist of…

  • Personal production cap at 25 plants.  Any person requiring more than this would be… A) Required to become an official LP or B) Set up with an LP that grows for them at a reduced cost $2 to $3 per gram
  • Free market support licensed producers (not government chosen)
  • Inclusion of all cannabis products as medical marijuana
  • Allow retail storefronts similar to compassion clubs which are already operating in the country.
