ACT NOW. We call on our politicians to act now to protect our families, our communities and our city from future devastation caused by flooding.
The Issue
We appeal to our provincial and federal politicians to properly fund, build and expedite watershed plans and mitigation infrastructure to prevent catastrophic damage from flooding within Calgary and the surrounding area.
In June 2013, massive flood waters devastated communities along the Bow, Elbow, Sheep, Little Bow, and Highwood rivers. With total damages estimated to exceed $6 billion and insurable damages projected to reach $3 billion, the 2013 Alberta floods is one of the costliest disasters in Canadian history.
The Calgary River Communities Action Group (CRCAG) has been advocating for critical upstream infrastructure and watershed management strategies for the past nine months. Mitigation measures are critical to ensuring that Calgary continues to operate as an economic leader in Canada. These projects will also protect all Albertans potentially impacted by future flooding and Alberta taxpayers. An investment in protection today will save billions of dollars in the future.
We can’t let this happen again!
Mitigation prevents loss of life and exposure to floodwaters that may contain sanitary waste, pollutants (such as pesticides, fuels), and large debris.
Mitigation can have a Positive Environmental Impact. Infrastructure can be properly designed and engineered to promote and sustain river ecosystems and wildlife habitats. While preventing future flooding will save our landfills from overflowing with personal effects and building materials destroyed by water.
With mitigation measures in place, businesses and service providers in the Calgary Downtown Core will remain operational year after year, without incurring repeated flood damage, and loss of productivity and resources. The savings to Albertans could be in the order of billions. For example, the Red River Floodway cost $63 million to construct and has saved Manitoba more than $30 billion in flood damage.
Most importantly, if our politicians act to prevent future flooding, they will help Albertans heal from the emotional devastation of the 2013 Flood and prevent this unquantifiable fallout from happening in the future. Bricks and mortar can be rebuilt, but the healing of affected Calgarians is a slow and difficult process.
Tell our politicians to take action now!
