Lord Grade Should Resign as Chairman of the Fundraising Regulator

Lord Grade is the Chairman of the Fundraising Regulator – a newly established, "independent regulator of charitable fundraising which has been established to strengthen the system of charity regulation and restore public trust in fundraising".
During his time with the Fundraising Regulator, Lord Grade has continually made broad sweeping statements to deliberately court controversy and fan the flames of division and discontent. He has presided over an organisation that has been unable to build strong relations with the charitable sector.
He has called charitable fundraisers “the Wild West”, “rogues and cowboys” and now “laggards”. His outbursts are so deliberately inflammatory that charities are justifiably sceptical that they would be given a fair hearing should they be subject to a complaint. As a result many not-for-profit organisations are dubious about engaging with the Fundraising Regulator.
Fundraisers and the organisations they work for want to have a regulator that is prudent, fair and impartial. But time and again Lord Grade has shown partiality and a stunning lack of independence. There is a genuine risk that his provocations will encourage donors to stop giving to causes that help the most vulnerable in society. At the very least Lord Grade’s words and pronouncements fail to restore public trust in fundraising. They do the opposite.
It appears that Lord Grade, who sits in the House of Lords as a Conservative peer, has an agenda that is not just about chairing a much needed impartial, independent regulator. It appears that his disrespect and disdain for fundraisers is a deliberate ploy to damage the work of thousands of social progressive organisations – even those that don’t fundraise.
Lord Grade’s term as the Chairman of the Fundraising Regulator has just been extended until the end of 2018.
This is unacceptable and we call upon Stephen Dunmore, Chief Executive of The Fundraising Regulator to initiate a process to replace Lord Grade immediately and find a chairman who is willing and able to represent donors and not-for-profit organisations responsibly.
