If breast screening aims to find breast cancer at an early stage, why does it typically start at the age of 50?

Today its well known that early detection often means simpler and more successful treatment. 

The sooner we detect and take action the better - living with cancer affects more than just the individual. The moment someone is diagnosed is the moment our family and friends become a victim of cancer too.
