Ms. Varma has been teaching Algebra 2 and PreCalculus for more than 2 years at LASA which is one of the best schools under the AISD authority. She has been active in helping her students progress and is always passionate about her job and making sure that high school students ascend the ladder of education in her specialized field in math. She has served the LASA community well and is a respected teacher as well as a friend to many students and faculty members, but all of this is sadly not enough for AISD's policymakers who seem to be totally disconnected from humanity and sympathy. See, Ms. Varma is currently teaching her classes online and has proved that she is quite effective at fulfilling her duties as a teacher over Zoom. She is doing her classes online because, not only due to a current global pandemic going on, she is in LA taking care of her mother who is 1. An at-risk individual for COVID 2. Currently suffering from illness and needs the help of her daughter to stay alive and somewhat healthy during this hellish time. AISD has given Ms. Varma an ultimatum, to choose between a job that she loves or her own family. They showed her no sympathy and pressured her into resigning.  She proved that she had a valid reason to teach online and that she was capable of fulfilling her duties as a teacher as well. The only reason she is forced to resign is because of haphazard policy-making that is out of touch with the needs of the students and teachers. This petition isn't only about making sure Ms. Varma makes her voice heard by the people running AISD and ruining her career, but it's a way to show that we the student body are not content with staying silent on the mistreatment of our academic leaders. This is more than just one teacher, this is the precedent that we must set for a pandemic that seems to have no end in sight. So I urge you all, students or others, this one click might change a life for the better and a future forever. Thank You.
