Improve the education and treatment of mental health in schools
The Issue
A young person's emotional development is one of the most precious things in life. If the children are the future, shouldn't more support be put into place to ensure they grow up healthy as can be? It is no secret that nowadays a young person is faced with more opportunities than ever before and more stress is placed on them from a young age. From exam changes set by the government; the constant uncertainty about University and their fees and cutbacks being made, a young person's psychological and emotional state is more vulnerable than ever before. I am one of those people affected. At the age of sixteen, I started crumbling under the pressure of my GCSEs and because of the lack of resources at my school, I had virtually no one to aid me in my emotional trauma. From lack of counsellors to little understanding of conditions, such as Trichotillomania, my issues were dismissed and I was left to vend for myself. Two years later and this time during my A Levels, the same problem happened, except things were more intense as an eighteen year old and it reached a dangerous point where I contemplated suicide on multiple occasions because of the uncertainty my future held. This could have been prevented. If mental health was treated like a physical condition, things could have been nipped in the bud a lot sooner. For some, it never was. Young people need support from a young age and need to be properly educated in mental health. It needs to be put in the national curriculum as its own topic and made available for ALL ages. More support needs to be reinforced and government cutbacks on the funding for mental health needs to be reduced significantly so a young person can feel assured knowing that whilst they are in school, a place they will spend most of their teenage years and emotional development, they have someone and somewhere to turn to when they need help.
