The Issue

To members of the West County Community,

There is a crucial need for collaboration between individuals, parents, labor partners, elected officials, and community organizations to support our Stege students. The Stege Community is requesting your commitment to advocating for WCCUSD to implement the following actions:

  1. The Board of the West Contra Costa Unified School District shall pass a resolution stating its commitment to rebuilding – not modernizing -- Stege Elementary School [Stege]. In support of this resolution, the Board shall further direct the Superintendent and Cabinet to, at minimum, follow those specifications previously used for Lake Elementary and Michelle Obama Elementary School.
  2. The Board shall direct the Superintendent and Cabinet to use the Alvarado school site as a temporary site or identify and establish another temporary school site for Stege. Stege Elementary shall only utilize the DeJean campus for two more months until the conclusion of the Fall 2024 semester.
  3. The Superintendent shall re-instate and fill the School Community Outreach Worker (SCOW) position at Stege Elementary School. The duties of the SCOW shall, at a minimum, include informing parents on the need to have their children tested for any hazardous materials poisoning; identifying applicable resources through partnerships with relevant county and local health entities; and continually informing and updating parents and the community of any changes in the area of hazardous exposures.
  4. The Superintendent shall provide, at a maximum frequency of monthly, updates to the Stege Community on the rebuild status and efforts to relocate to the school.
  5. Stege administration  and site staff shall hold community meetings of a suitable frequency, either weekly or monthly, designed to hear and respond to the concerns of parents and community members regarding the relocation situation and to provide updates on the relocation situation.
  6. The Superintendent shall report to the Board at a maximum frequency of monthly on the status and progress of improvements to the safety conditions at the Stege-DeJean site until a new temporary site is available.
  7. The WCCUSD Board shall request the County Board of Supervisors to direct the County Public Health Department to collaborate with CalOsha and other county entities to conduct a complete and thorough testing of the entire Stege Elementary School site. They shall ascertain all potential environmental hazards and materials to which students, staff, teachers, and administrators were exposed.
  8. The WCCUSD Board shall publicly acknowledge the hazards that students, teachers, and community members have been exposed to.
  9. The WCCUSD Board and the County Board of Supervisors shall direct the Superintendent, their cabinet, and the County Public Health Department to collaborate to provide students with lead and other chemical testing at an accessible location.

This petition was created with the input of many community members with direct and indirect ties to Stege Elementary School. Please consider signing our petition and joining our efforts to ensure justice for our students.
