The Australian Government has stated it will increase its aid to 0.5 per cent of Gross National Income by 2015–2016 in line with its commitment to the Millennium Development Goals. Both the Government and the Opposition have pledged to lift aid levels to 0.5 per cent of gross national income by 2015. Tony Abbott recently stated that the Millennium Development Goals are "a commitment for 2015; not necessarily a commitment for the next couple of years", and that aid spending is something that can be deferred.
