John "Johnny" Grube Way: Co-naming Amboy Road in front of Msgr. Farrell High School

We, the undersigned members of the Msgr. Farrell High School community, who live, work and study in the Community Board 3 area, conscious of our responsibilities as citizens of the United States of America and of the State of New York, and as members of the New York City and Staten Island communities, believe that future generations should be kept aware of the people of this borough whose generosity of spirit should serve as examples to everyone.
One such person is the late John Grube, a life-long Staten Islander and a well-known figure on the North Shore who chose to make the Oakwood neighborhood his second home when he adopted Msgr. Farrell High School as his family of brothers.
Mr. Grube’s story is well-known, and has been rehearsed in the Staten Island Advance among other publications. Though never actually a Farrell student, he was more a “Farrell man” than any of us. Though not a member of the faculty, our teachers all acknowledge that he taught us more than anyone. Though never a Farrell athlete, he was the most dedicated, enthusiastic and sportsmanlike “player” on our teams’ benches. His was the first face we saw as we entered the building on many mornings, and his was the very last hand we shook as we marched out of our
gymnasium on graduation day. He struggled with physical handicaps and developmental disabilities, but was stronger and wiser than us all.We therefore respectfully request that the portion of Amboy Road immediately in front of our
gymnasium – Mr. Grube’s favorite place in our school – be co-named, “John Grube Way,” and that a sign be added to the pole on Amboy Road on the sidewalk in front of Msgr. Farrell High School, at that street’s intersection with Amber Street, to reflect this.
