Heketi Community Charter School is an independent, community-based charter school in the Mott Haven neighborhood of the South Bronx. Our mission is to provide an exceptional educational solution through an integrated educational design with high expectations, extensive academic and social-emotional support, and a high level of family and community engagement. Heketi opened in September 2012 and has provided rigorous curriculum and instruction along with a responsive and restorative learning environment so that all children feel safe and respected. We have over 270 students in our classrooms this year and have graduated 3 classes of students since 2017. 

Our school's charter authorizer, SUNY CSI, has recommended that Heketi not receive a renewal of its charter. In effect, this means that Heketi will close at the of this school year in June 2020. The Charter School Committee of the Board of Trustees at SUNY will make the final vote in the next few months to confirm SUNY CSI’s recommendation. 

As the Heketi community -- families, students, staff, and community partners -- we disagree with SUNY CSI's recommendation. Heketi has had a strong impact on our community and us. Our children learn to read, write, mathematize, and to think critically. They have also learned to use our guiding principles as friends and learners -- compassion, responsibility, gratitude, communication, collaboration, curiosity, courage, persistence, and respect. If a child is having a rough day, they are able to figure out what will help them focus by processing their feelings and coming up with a solution. The school keeps learning, respect, and safety as priorities for everyone in the school. Heketi is a unique school that has a lot more to offer. 

In order to support our appeal, we need your signatures and support. Please share this petition with your communities. We are using our voices and community to let SUNY CSI know that Heketi is a school and much more for all of us. We want to see Heketi remain open and grow for many more years!

Heketi Community Charter School es una escuela autónoma independiente basada en la comunidad en el vecindario de Mott Haven del sur del Bronx. Nuestra misión es dar una solución educativa excepcional a través de un diseño educativo integrado con altas expectativas, amplio apoyo académico y socioemocional, y un alto nivel de compromiso familiar y comunitario. Como la comunidad de Heketi (familias, estudiantes, personal y socios de la comunidad), no estamos de acuerdo con la recomendación de SUNY CSI. Heketi ha tenido un fuerte impacto en nuestra comunidad y en nosotros. Nuestros niños aprenden a leer, escribir, matematizar y pensar críticamente. También han aprendido a usar nuestros principios fundamentales como amigos y aprendices: compasión, responsabilidad, gratitud, comunicación, colaboración, curiosidad, coraje, persistencia y respeto. Si un niño está teniendo un día difícil, descubren qué lo ayudará a concentrarse al procesar sus sentimientos y encontrar una solución. La escuela mantiene el aprendizaje, el respeto y la seguridad como prioridades para todos en la escuela. Heketi es una escuela única que tiene mucho más que ofrecer.
