We, the undersigned, charge that the Government of India have been committing crimes against humanity against the Tamil people. 

Students of Tamil Nadu have been protesting against the Indian central Government’s intervention in Tamil cultural affairs. The key demand of the protesters was to permanently remove the ban on Jallikattu and provide assistance to farmers who were affected by the drought. These demands received overwhelming support of the people. The protest, which began on The 16th of January, was peaceful until the police unleashed violence on 23rd January against the protesters.

The state sponsored violence organised by the Indian police in Tamil Nadu was lawless and violated international humanitarian laws.

The police not only used violence against students, but also against the fisherman community around Marina beach in Chennai. The fisherman communities have been targeted for the support they provided to the students and innocent civilians from police violence. It is to be noted that no details were disclosed regarding casualties and it is believed that the lives of many people are currently in danger due to the ongoing police attacks.

We call on the United Nations Human Rights Commissioner to visit Tamil Nadu and meet the victims of police violence.

We call for an independent investigation by the United Nations into the state sponsored police violence against Tamils.

We call on the United Nations to pressure Government of India to release the details of detainees and immediately release all students and civilians who were arrested by the police.
