Elwood J Knox deserves a 2nd chance. Together we can give it to him
The Issue
My family and I are looking for your support in securing the release of Elwood J. Knox who has spent almost two decades behind bars. In 2001, he was arrested and convicted of three count(s) 1: Three Hundred Sixty (360) Months Imprisonment, to run concurrently with Count 3. Five (5) Years Supervised Release, to run concurrently. Count(s) 2: One Hundred and Twenty (120) Months Imprisonment, to be served consecutively. Five (5) Years Supervised Release, to run concurrently. Count(s) 3: One Hundred Twenty (120) Months Imprisonment, to run concurrently with Count 1. We feel, as do many, that he and thousands others in similar situations have been over sentenced.
My Family and I understand that there was a need for Elwood to be imprisoned, but to be given a sentence of 40 years seems unreasonable. Elwood has spent his adult life in prison. How can he continue to be judged for drug crimes that were committed in the 90's during his teenage and young adult years? We can say that his time incarcerated has been used wisely- Elwood has continued his education and has become a mentor to incoming and current inmates. Elwood also used this time to reflect on the crimes he was sentenced for and has a plan to move forward and stay clear of the criminal justice system in the future. When he is released he has a support system in place to include his family and community members. Elwood also has been researching ways to give back to the community once he is given the opportunity.
Currently the demand for criminal justice reform is on the way and some incarcerated men/women are filing motions to the courts or the president to reconsider their sentence. Whatever avenue our incarcerated brothers/sisters choose to take, they still need our support. 2021, has shown everyone what the power of unity.
We are asking for you to support the return of Elwood Knox by signing our online petition. As of 2015, mandatory sentences have been deemed illegal and he has already served 20 years behind bars. The time he has spent in prison is more than enough to reflect the seriousness of his offense, has provided just punishment, promoted respect for the law, and more. Elwood has stayed out of trouble while doing his time and has taken every opportunity to better himself and stay in the lives of his Family. He is not the same person he was as when he was arrested so many years ago.
By signing our petition to bring Elwood home, you can not only show your support against mass incarceration, but also make real change for the better in the lives of my family.
