Algiers is not Algiers without the historic L. B. Landry High School! Reclaim Our Name!

The Issue

L. B. Landry - O.Perry Walker College and Career Preparatory High School combines the names Dr. Lord Beaconsfield Landry, an African-American doctor who provided free medical care to the poor in the Algiers community with Oliver Perry Walker, a white superintendent, who did not think African-Americans should attend school with whites. While there are some who believe that Walker's legacy should be remembered and celebrated because of what he did for "the community", I don't think that the school building named to honor someone with of a race that he despised is the place. O. Perry Walker and his legacy needs to return to the street named after someone I'm sure he would rather his name be associated with, Confederate General, Adolph Meyer.
