The Issue

"STATE OF ISRAEL SQUARE" MUST EXIST IN NEW YORK!

We, the undersigned residents and supporters of New York City, respectfully propose that the currently UNNAMED public space in Brighton Beach, Brooklyn, shown on the accompanying map and aerial photograph, be officially designated:

STATE OF ISRAEL SQUARE

The proposed site is located between Brighton 14th Street and Brighton 15th Street, extending south toward Brightwater Avenue and the Brighton Beach waterfront.

THIS PROPOSAL DOES NOT SEEK TO RENAME OR TO CO-NAME ANY EXISTING SQUARE, PARK, STREET, OR NEIGHBORHOOD.

The public space shown in the accompanying materials is currently UNNAMED. Our proposal is simply to give this distinctive location a permanent and meaningful name.

Brighton Beach has a long and significant Jewish history. Over different periods, the neighborhood became home to large Jewish immigrant communities, and beginning in the 1970s it received tens of thousands of Jewish immigrants from the former Soviet Union. Jewish institutions, traditions, and community life have long been an important part of Brighton Beach.

We believe that "STATE OF ISRAEL SQUARE" would recognize the historical, cultural, and civic ties connecting New York’s Jewish community with the State of Israel.

The square could also provide a clearly identified public gathering place for community events, commemorations, cultural programs, expressions of solidarity, and celebrations such as Israel Independence Day.

The proposed location is especially appropriate because it is a recognizable public space close to the Brighton Beach waterfront and boardwalk, in the heart of a neighborhood with deep Jewish history.

The accompanying map and aerial photograph clearly identify the exact public space proposed for the designation.

WE ARE NOT ASKING TO TAKE AWAY SOMEONE ELSE’S NAME.

WE ARE ASKING TO GIVE A NAME TO A PUBLIC SPACE THAT IS CURRENTLY UNNAMED.

New York City regularly names and co-names thoroughfares and public places through legislation adopted by the City Council.

We respectfully ask the appropriate New York City authorities, elected representatives, and Brooklyn Community Board 13 to consider and support the official designation of this public space as:

STATE OF ISRAEL SQUARE

We invite New Yorkers and everyone who supports this proposal to add their name to this petition and help bring the initiative before the appropriate New York City authorities.
