The issue being raised by this petition is not ultimately about the  character and actions of a Secretary of State, representing this nation and its purchase of the land and essentially the people, of Alaska.

The petition is being raised to question the action of a group of private citizens being permitted to put a statue in a public place of prominence that ultimately honors the actions of the white patriarchal authority.  History won't be changed by the presence or ultimate removal of this statue. If this statue makes anyone feel uncomfortable, it should be removed.  If this statue makes anyone feel ashamed or reflect upon the continuing impacts upon the first people of this land, it should be removed.

What might be honored, if ever so slightly healed, by the removal of this statue, is the recognition of the historical trauma that has effected generations of Alaska's first people by the colonization and take over by white authoritative dominance.

As some supporters have expressed, could we honor Elizabeth Peratrovich instead.
