To the Honourable Members of the House of Assembly in Parliament assembled -

This petition of certain citizens of Australia draws to the attention of the House:

We draw the attention of your Honourable house the well known difficult circumstances veterans face reintegrating with civilian society when transitioning from the Australian Defence Force. This includes higher rates of suicide, difficulties maintaining social connections and increased risk of alcoholism and other medical issues. There is an expectation in Australian society that we will look after our serving men and women due to the special nature of service life.

While Veterans are issued with a Veteran card to access concessions thanks to the recently passed Australian Veterans’ Recognition (Putting Veterans and their Families First) Act 2019 the concessions offered vary widely across the states. Many states do not extend Government concessions to veterans.

On the extreme, at times, disabled Veterans are entitled to less concessions than their civilian equivalents due to complexities within the government schemes.

We, your petitioners, therefore ask that your Honourable House to:

  1. Work in collaboration with each of the State and Territory Governments to ensure Government concessions are consistently applied across state and territory boundaries to all Veteran cardholders;
  2. acknowledge the difficulties the veteran population as a whole have with access and participation in civilian life; and
  3. extend concessions to all veteran cardholders, not just those who hold cards embossed TPI.

We urge the respective Honourable house to:

  • Increased funding to the states and territories to cover the increased cost of concessions
  • issue a commonwealth pension concession card to all veterans
  • grant the veteran card the same status as the pension concession card
