By establishing a Conviction Integrity Unit in Wisconsin, which is desperately needed, a path forward would open up for wrongfully incarcerated inmates that are currently facing a dead-end road.

A CIU can save time, resources, and lives for those that do not benefit from the Pardon process. Many states have one, Wisconsin should too.

What is a Conviction Integrity Unit?

According to the University of Michigan's National Registry of Exonerations website:
A Conviction Integrity Unit (CIU) is a division of a prosecutorial office that works to prevent, identify, and remedy false convictions. They are sometimes called Conviction Review Units (CRUs). https://www.law.umich.edu/special/exoneration/Pages/Conviction-Integrity-Units.aspx

Pardon Board process

The current Pardon Board process is unavailable to those still incarcerated, leaving them no path forward. The pardon rules only apply to individuals who fit the criteria and have served their time. A CIU would apply to individuals who are currently incarcerated.
