Start St. John’s County Public Schools in September
The Issue
As a parent in St. John's County, Florida, I have seen firsthand how the early August heat impacts our community’s children when they return to school.
Walking to school, biking to school, and even busing can be considered exceptionally hot during this first month back. Outdoor activities for many of our children, activities like recess are crucial. They not only offer necessary physical exercise but also a break from academic pressures, helping improve focus and overall well-being.
According to weather data from the National Weather Service, August is statistically the hottest month in Florida, with temperatures often soaring above 90°F. High humidity levels make it feel even hotter, creating potentially dangerous conditions for outdoor activities. Research from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) warns that children are more susceptible to heat-related illnesses, which can be avoided by minimizing outdoor exposure during such extreme conditions.
Delaying the school start date to early September, or after Labor Day aligns with practices in several Northern states, where the school year traditionally begins in September. This adjustment would grant families to utilize all of August as summer vacation, and provide faculty and staff a reprieve as well from returning to school in August.
Starting school in September could also positively affect attendance and academic performance. A study from the American Educational Research Association suggests that a later start date may reduce absentee rates, and children are less likely to fall ill from heat exhaustion.
Let us urge the St. John's County School Board to consider the health and well-being of our children by adopting a September start for our schools. By doing so, we can ensure they start the school year healthy, refreshed, and ready to learn.
Please sign this petition to support a change for a healthier and more enjoyable start to the school year for all students in St. John's County.
The amount of educational school days would stay the same and not be reduced per county and state laws.
