Allowing Gamma to be changed would allow easier sight while mining underwater or in any dark area for that matter. It isn't really an advantage or disadvantage to the player. It can, however, be seen as a disadvantage because the player wouldn't be able to tell wheather it is night outside or wheather an area is dark or not.
